Studio & Equipment Technician

About the Job

The AMP Studio Team is looking for a full-time Studio & Equipment Technician to be responsible for the smooth and efficient flow and upkeep of production equipment and studio facilities. A vital aspect of the role is effective communication with the AMP Studios Coordinator (SC) and the AMP Studios Operations Manager (SOM) for day-to-day duties, as well as, managing ongoing projects and assignments. It’s essential that the Studio Tech (SET) be able to function as a positive representative of AMP in interactions with vendors, freelancers, and other members of the production community.

What You’ll do at Amp Studios

Working with the SOM in getting the right gear to the right people at the right time is the fundamental function of this position. It is also paramount that the studio spaces are prepped, clean, and contain all equipment rentals before clients arrive on the day of their production/event. Producers, crews, and clients are all dependent on the SET’s performance in order to do their own jobs well and keep clients satisfied. This requires not only gathering hardware and checking it in and out of AMP’s inventory, but also solid communication in the pre-production process to ensure the appropriate gear is available, complete, and operational.

They will need to be able to lift up to fifty pounds and become familiar with the studio facility’s layout and previously established placement of all equipment and supplies.

The SET will also coordinate with the SOM in studio management of in-house and client productions. They will, when applicable, paint the CYC floor/wall before an upcoming production.

AMP strives to utilize technology to keep things running well, to make everyone’s job easier, and to provide management with insight. The SET interacts on a constant basis with our project management, scheduling, and inventory software…. The operation of our system is key to the system serving the whole company. Ingesting new items into inventory, tracking and scanning equipment inventory in and out for productions/clients/AMP Staff, and correctly updating the status of gear and contacts are all common functions the SET performs on a regular basis inside the system.

Technology is also always changing and updating, just as AMP changes and evolves. Reporting on the effectiveness of methods, processes, and structure, as well as making suggestions and improvements for Camera, Camera Support, Broadcast/Streaming Capabilities, and Lighting/Grip Gear will be important to help facilitate AMP growth.

AMP’s inventory of equipment, though robust and growing, will not always be adequate to cover all needs of production. Coordinating rental equipment and purchases from time to time from outside vendors for use on AMP productions is also a SET responsibility.

Representing AMP in a positive light while interacting with vendors is expected.

Reporting damaged equipment or maintenance issues with AMP Vehicles (including the scissor lift) to the SOM in a timely manner is important to not running into time-wasting occurrences during production or event. The SET will also keep all AMP Studios vehicles and equipment fully gassed/charged, clean, and ready for next usage.

Though it is nominally a Monday-Friday, 40-hour job, accommodating the unusual schedules of productions may, at times, require adjusting your hours. Occasionally, equipment may return to AMP at the end of a long shoot and be needed again for an entirely different shoot early the next morning. Shoots happen or may need to be prepped on weekends and around holidays. This is an example of the sort of flexibility required of the SET. It’s your job to make things work, without incurring unreasonable costs to the company, all while keeping a healthy work/life balance for yourself. Shifting hours instead of adding hours can help the SET get everything done while maintaining a balance.
