A word about companies offering to help you get work as an extra and Texas Regulation of Talent Agencies...

All talent agencies that have a place of business in Texas, or advertise in Texas, and obtain or attempt to obtain employment for artists in Texas, or recruit artists from a temporary location in Texas, must obtain a certificate of registration in order to operate a talent agency. The Talent Agencies Occupations Code defines a talent agent as "a person engaged in the business of obtaining or attempting to obtain employment for artists, including a person that counsels or directs an artist in the development of the artist's professional career." Before you enter into an agreement with a person or company that purports to hire extras or find extras for film and television projects, find out if they are registered with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration. This will protect both you and our local industry from unscrupulous companies endeavoring to make a quick buck at the expense of others.

Before entering into an agreement with any agency or representative, you might want to read the Talent Agencies Occupation Code. Among the more important rules that you should be aware of are:

- A talent agency may not charge, as a condition of registering an applicant or representing an artist, a registration or advance fee;

- A talent agency may not require an applicant or artist to subscribe to or use a specific publication, video or audio tape, postcard service, advertisement service, resume service, photographer, or acting or modeling school or workshop.

Keep in mind that there are many ways to become an extra in film and video productions. A good rule of thumb is that you should never have to pay anyone to find you work - a bonafide agent only makes money when you make money, not before.
